The 11th-ranked Murray State rifle team will travel to Morehead, Ky., this weekend for the OVC Rifle Championships on Saturday and Sunday hosted by Morehead State.
The Racers will be facing No. 6 Jacksonville State, No. 16 UT Martin, No. 18 Columbus State and 19th-ranked Morehead State at the competition.
Competition will begin on Saturday morning with smallbore starting at 7 a.m. On day two, air rifle will also begin at 7 a.m., with team and individual awards to follow.
The top-ranked team in the conference, JSU, won the 2012 championship, sweeping both smallbore and air rifle. Junior Sam Muegge will return for the Gamecocks as the defending smallbore champion, while Murray State's Kelsey Emme, UT Martin's Joe Barefoot, Morehead State's Ethan Cole, and JSU's Dan McCall return after being named freshmen of the year last season.
The Racers were off last weekend as they shot during the first week of competition of the Withrow Open. Back on Jan. 19 at the Withrow Open, freshman Tessa Howald recorded the second-highest aggregate score ever at the Pat Spurgin Rifle Range when she recorded a score of 1174, scoring 584 in smallbore and 590 in air rifle.
The Racers were without Emme at the Withrow Open as she was in Munich, Germany during the match competing in the Bavarian Airgun Championships where she finished in eighth place and recorded a score of 398/400.
