The Murray State softball team will look to improve on its three-game when streak when it travels to Birmingham, Ala., for the Magic City Classic, hosted by Samford and UAB.
After dropping the first two games of last weekend's Arkansas Invitational, the Racers won the final three games to take the Arkansas Invitational title. Murray State dropped its opening contests to Saint Louis and Arkansas, but bounced back with two wins over Louisiana-Monroe, including the championship game, and a nine-inning win over Saint Louis.
With the semi-final against the Billikens tied at four, Casey Castile sent the Racers in to the title game with a three run blast in the ninth. In the championship game, the Racers took home the title with a 10-2 six-inning win over La-Monroe.
In the win over Saint Louis, CheyAnne Gaskey set a new school record for strikeouts by fanning 14 batters in the game. Alexa Becker led MSU on the weekend by turning in a .600 batting average, with nine hits, five runs, three RBIs, two doubles, a stolen base and a home run.
This weekend will feature two new opponents for the Racers and one familiar foe. Murray State has never faced South Alabama nor Nicholls State, both of which it face twice this weekend. The only opponent MSU has any history with is UAB.
This weekend will mark just the third meeting between the two teams, with the series split, 1-1. Both meetings took place in Birmingham on March 15, 2011. The first game went to the Blazers by a 4-0 margin, while the second, also a shutout, went the way of the Racers, 2-0.
The Jaguars (13-1) are currently on a 12-game win streak and have dropped just one game this season, a one run affair to OVC-foe SIU Edwardsville. So far this season, USA has tallied wins over Mississippi State and Ole Miss, as well as another of the Racer's opponents this weekend, Nicholls State. The Jaguars continued their winning ways last weekend when they swept four games at the Jacksonville Invitational.
Alex Breeden currently leads her team with a .400 average, while three different Jaguars currently boast a team-high 11 RBIs. In the circle, Farish Beard is currently 5-0 with a 1.58 ERA and a team-high 43 strikeouts. Hannah Campbell currently boasts the team's lowest ERA at 0.71 in is 5-1 on the year.
The Colonels are currently 7-7 on the season and are coming off a 3-1 performance at the Blues City Classic in Southaven, Miss. The Colonels picked up wins over OVC opponents Belmont and SEMO, as well as Indiana State, but fell to UMKC.
Leah Andrus currently leads the way for her team with a .333 batting average, while Brittany Marcet follows with a .316 average and a team-high nine RBIS. Ashton Bennett is currently 5-2 with a 1.11 ERA, a .182 opponent's average and 23 strikeouts, all team bests.
The Blazers are currently 6-4 on the season and are coming off of nine days of rest. UAB is currently on a two game skid after having its previously perfect weekend at the Kennesaw State Classic spoiled by UT Martin, followed by a loss to No. 1 Alabama.
Amy Dennis currently leads the Blazers with a .412 batting average, while Kristen McGrath is hitting .400 with a team-high 11 RBIs. Pitching wise, Lauren Webster leads the way a 2-1 record, 1.83 ERA and 34 strikeouts.
