The Murray State Women's Tennis Squad opened the 2013 season with a 5-2 victory over NAIA power Lindsey Wilson College on Sunday afternoon at the Kenlake Tennis Center.
The victory is the first of head coach Olga Elkin's career at Murray State. With the win, the Racers improve to 5-2 all time in coaching debuts and 25-22 overall in season openers.
After dropping the doubles point, the Racers came out firing in the singles portion of the match, winning five of six matches and dropping just one set.
The doubles team of Ashley Canty and Carla Suga won the lone doubles match for Murray State, defeating Lindsey Wilson's Slavica Milavovic and Sarah Bernos 8-4. The tandem of Megan Blue and Erin Patton were defeated 8-4 and the team of Carolyn Huerth and Suzaan Stoltz lost 8-6 to give the Blue Raiders the doubles point.
In singles play it was a different story as Canty recorded a 6-3, 6-0 victory at number one for the Racers. Suga was victorious in her match at number two, winning 6-4 and 6-2. Both Blue and Patton won their singles matches 6-1, 6-2 at number three and four, respectively.
After Murray State had secured the team victory, the final two singles matches were played in an eight-game pro set format. Huerth won her match at number five 8-3, while Stoltz was defeated at number six 8-6.
The Racers return to action this weekend with a pair of matches in Arkansas. MSU will face Central Arkansas on Feb. 9 and will head to Arkansas State on the 10th.
