Breds Fall in Extras in Game Two
3/9/2013 9:42:00 PM | Baseball
Morehead State got a walk-off single through a drawn-in infield off the bat of Cole Cleveland to give the Eagles a 2-1, 10-inning victory over Murray State in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday evening at Legacy Field in Mason, Ohio.
Taylor Pickens started the rally for the Eagles as he drew a leadoff walk and stole second. After a groundout moved the runner to third, Cleveland pushed the ball through the right side for the game winner.
The Breds had their chances, but were unable to capitalize, as they left 10 runners on base, including leaving the bases loaded twice.
The Eagles (6-9, 1-1 OVC) got on the board in the first inning as a pair of base hits and a fielder's choice put runners on the corners with two outs. Nick Duff drove in the runner from third with a single down the left-field line.
The Breds (6-8, 1-1 OVC) finally scratched a run across in the eighth inning as Brandon Elliott drew a leadoff walk and went to second on a passed ball. Mike Kozlowski put runners on the corners when the first baseman dropped the ball on the throw from the shortstop. Noah Zipko took advantage as he delivered a sacrifice fly to right field.
Andrew Bramley was impressive in his first collegiate start as he allowed just one run on four hits and four strikeouts over seven innings. He was matched by MOR starter Noah Smallwood who allowed just three hits over seven shutout innings.
Sheldon Baxter (1-2) was saddled with the loss as he allowed on run on one hit and three walks over 2.1 innings. Austin Haney (1-0) picked up the victory after not allowing a run on one hit over 2.2 innings.
The two teams close out the three-game series Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m.
