Local standout Janssen Starks has chosen Murray State University as the place where she will continue her academic and women's basketball careers, head coach Rob Cross announced on Monday.
Starks recently wrapped up an outstanding career at Murray High School in which she helped the Tigers to two fourth district championships, two fourth district runner-up finishes, three first region runner-up finishes and one first region title. Starks scored 2,516 points during her career at Murray and will leave the school as its all-time assist leader. She is a four-time All-Purchase Area selection and was named Purchase Area Player of the Year and First Region Player of the Year following her senior campaign.
Starks is coming off of an outstanding senior year in which she led the state of Kentucky in total points scored and tied for third in points per game with fellow future Racer Taylor Porter, who signed in the fall. She also led the Commonwealth in both total 3-pointers made and 3-pointers made per game, in addition to finishing fourth state-wide in free throw percentage at 85 percent.
Starks brings the Murray State 2013 class up to five after four players signed this past November. Nikia Edom of Romeoville, Ill, Julia Fox of Lebanon, Tenn., Ke'Shaunan James of Jackson, Tenn., and Taylor Porter of Louisa, Ky., will all join Starks when they arrive on campus this fall for the 2013-14 season.
Cross on Starks: "We are thrilled that Janssen has decided to continue her career at Murray State University. She has a tremendous work ethic which enables her to get the most out of her abilities and her teammates. Her ability to shoot with deep range and get to the free throw line will give her a chance to compete for playing time early in her career here at MSU but the things that separate her from a lot of players is her elite passing ability and knack for making those around her better. She played at Murray High under Coach Rechelle Turner which means excellence has been demanded of her throughout her career. Janssen is an outstanding young woman and a person of high character who is going to have a positive impact on the community of Murray."
