Softball Goes To SIUE For Key OVC West Series

After a mid-week rain-out, the Murray State softball team now turns its attention to a crucial OVC series at SIU Edwardsville. Start time in Edwardsville in slated for 1 p.m., on Saturday and Sunday with a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday.
The Racers went 2-2 last weekend in a rare home/away travel scenario. Murray State dropped game one of a doubleheader at home to Tennessee State on Saturday, 5-3, but rallied to top the Tigers in game two, 7-1. On Sunday, the Racers traveled to Nashville for a doubleheader with Belmont where they won game one, 4-1, but lost game two on a walk-off, 3-2.
Shelbey Miller ended her week with a team-leading batting average of .333 that included going 3-for-3 with two doubles in game on Saturday versus the Tigers. Ellyn Troup also batted .333 on the week, but turned in a .538 on-base percentage by drawing a team-high three walks and getting hit by a pitch once. In the circle, CheyAnne Gaskey led the way with a 1.58 ERA, after she went 1-1 with a save, 12 strikeouts and just four walks.
Murray State and SIU Edwardsville have met on 11 previous occasions with the Cougars holding a 7-4 advantage. The Racers are 2-3 all-time against the Cougars in Edwardsville and 2-2 at home.
Murray State won the first-ever OVC series between the two teams, 2-1, in 2010, but SIUE won the 2011 and 2012 series by the same tally. The first meetings between the two teams were in 2010 as part of the Red & Blue Classic in Oxford, Miss. The Cougars won both meetings at Ole Miss, including topping the Racers 13-8 in the program's first game.
The Cougars will enter the series with a 34-9 overall record and a 17-3 mark in the OVC. SIUE recently had a 17-game win-streak snapped by Jacksonville State on Sunday, but still went 3-1 against Tennessee Tech and the Gamecocks on the weekend.
Rebecca Gray and Haley Chambers were named as the OVC Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for their performance over the four-game stretch. Gray hit .700 on the week including four extra base hits, while Chambers struck out 22 and tossed the fifth perfect game in school history.
Alex McDavid currently leads the SIUE offense with a .416 batting average, while Gray follows at .370. Chambers is currently 19-3 on the season with a 1.63 ERA and a team-high 155 strikeouts, in addition to hitting .357 in 14 at bats at the plate.
