Errors Costly in Loss to Panthers

Murray State committed six errors and Eastern Illinois pushed across six runs in the seventh to break open a tie game and hand the Breds a 15-8 defeat Saturday afternoon in the middle game of a three-game series at Coaches Stadium.
With the game tied in the seventh, the Panthers strung together five hits in pushing across six runs in the inning. Cameron Berra broke the tie with an RBI single to center field, and Jacob Reese followed two batters later with another RBI single. Caleb Howell collected the third RBI hit of the inning, before things got worse for the Breds.
Treysen Vavra struck out with the bases and two outs, but the ball got away from the catcher to allow a run to score. Brant Valach was then hit by a pitch to drive in a run, and Nick Priessman closed out the scoring with a single off the glove of the pitcher.
The Panthers (9-18, 2-8 OVC) struck first in the third inning as a leadoff single went to third on a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Vavra drove in the runner from third with a ground out to second base. With two outs, a ground ball went through the legs of the first baseman and allowed two more runs to score.
The Breds (12-18, 6-8 OVC) got one run back in the fourth as Brandon Elliott beat out an infield single and went to second on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Brandon Eggenschwiler. A passed ball advanced Elliott to third, and Mike Kozlowski delivered an RBI groundout to the right side.
EIU got the run right back in the home half of the inning as a throwing error to start the inning came around to score. With one out, Howell singled through the right side to move the runner to third, but when the throw home sailed over the catcher's head, the runner raced home from third.
MSU took its first lead of the game in the fifth as Taylor Mathews reached on a fielding error. With one out, Paul Ritzheimer was hit by a pitch and Ty Stetson followed with an RBI single through the left side. Brandon Eggenschwiler drew a two-out walk before Kozlowski cleared the base with a double to left center.
The Panthers quickly responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning With a pair of runners on, Demetre Taylor delivered a two-run double off the base of the fence in left field. Two batters later, Reese delivered a sacrifice bunt to score the runner from third.
The scoring continued in the sixth for the Breds as the bottom of the order came through in a big way. Mathews started things with a single down the right-field line. Rick Linton followed with a single through the right side, and took second on the throwing error to third. Ritzheimer pulled MSU within one run with a groundout to the right side, and Stetson tied the game with a single through the right side.
The Panthers added two more runs in the eighth, but the Breds did not go quietly in the ninth. Ritzheimer was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Elliott drove him in with a triple into the right-field corner.
Sheldon Baxter (1-3) took the loss after allowing five runs on four hits over 1.2 innings. Garrison Stenger (3-0) earned the victory in relief after allowing one hit and striking out one in one inning of work.
Stetson and Elliott led the offense by collecting two hits each. Stetson drove in a pair of runs, while Elliott extended his hit streak to nine games. Kozlowski drove in four runs on the game, including a three-run double.
The two teams close out the three-game series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
