Murray State women's basketball senior Mariah Robinson was named the 2012-13 Margaret Simmons Female Athlete of the Year, as chosen by a campus committee. The award was handed out at the 25th Celebrate Women Luncheon hosted by the Murray State Women's Center.
The Margaret Simmons Female Athlete of the Year award is given to the female student-athlete that best demonstrates the characteristics of former Murray State track and field coach Margaret Simmons, how well they influenced and inspired other student-athletes and how they represent the university.
Robinson is one of the most prolific women's basketball players in Racer history. She leaves MSU as the all-time leader in both made 3-pointers and 3-point attempts at 264 and 768, respectively. She is one of only four players in school history to end their career with at least 1,500 points and 500 rebounds. With 575 career rebounds and 1,583 career points, Robinson joins Racer greats Sheila Smith, Michelle Wenning and Ashley N. Hayes as the only players to accomplish the unique feat.
"Mariah had a wonderful career here at Murray State and this is just the cherry on top," said head coach Rob Cross. "Apart from her outstanding accomplishments on the court, Mariah is even more exceptional off the court. She is an amazing person who is constantly giving of herself to help others: whether it's teammates, a friend or family member or someone she barely knows. She has been a great ambassador for our team, department and university over the past four seasons and is the embodiment of everything Margaret Simmons is and has been to Murray State over the years."
Over the course of her career, Robinson earned several honors including adidas® OVC Player of the Week and All-OVC accolades. Earlier this year, she was honored by her hometown of Hartford, Ky., with a Honorary Sorehead Certificate in recognition of her contributions in community service to the city.
