Women's volleyball head coach Dave Schwepker collected his 200th career win at Murray State over the weekend as his Racers went 3-0 at the Wright State Invitational. Schwepker becomes just the fifth coach in OVC history to win 200 or more matches with one school.
For the second straight week Murray State won an invitational. Last week they won the Spartan-Aggie Invitational and this week went 3-0 at the Wright State Invitational. The Racers now sit at 7-3 on the season, their best start through 10 games since 2006.
Game One: Murray State 3, Wright State 1 – 25-16, 25-22, 23-25, 27-25
The Racers broke a 4-all tie in set number one with a 4-0 run and never looked back, rolling to a 25-16 victory. Emily Schmahl knocked down four of her eight kills in the set.
Set number two was again all Racers as they led from the opening point. The Raiders made it close near the end, getting to within two at 24-22, but Murray State put a stop to the small comeback attempt and went up 2-0 with a 25-22 win.
Wright State seemed to catch their stride at the end of the second set and carried it into sets three and four. The Raiders were able to break an 8-all tie in set number three with an 8-1 run, going up 16-9. Murray State climbed back to tie the score twice at 21-21 and again at 22-22, but couldn't pass the Raiders as they ended the set with a kill from Ellen Senf, one of 10 for her.
The final set was a classic back and forth affair with nine ties and four lead changes. Murray State built and early four point lead, 14-10, but a 6-1 Raider run gave them their first lead of the game. Wright State kept the lead and had set point at 24-22 but could not put the Racers away. On the strength of a pair of Alyssa Lelm kills and a few Raider attack errors, Murray State completed the comeback with a 27-25 win for their second win of the tournament.
Scottie Ingram led the Racers with a match-high 16 kills and Lelm followed her with 15 of her own.
Game Two: Murray State 3, Robert Morris 2 – 16-25, 25-15, 22-25, 25-16, 15-12
Murray State was marred in a tight battle to start the match, with the score tied at 14 in the opening set. Things quickly fell apart however as Robert Morris claimed a lead they never relinquished. The Colonials closed the set on an 11-2 run to take 1-0 match lead. Arden Fisher landed three kills during the run and RMU was helped out by five Racer errors.
The second set saw the Racers flip the script from the end of the first. Murray State opened up an 8-1 lead from the start and although Robert Morris closed the game to one, the Racers never trailed as they cruised to a 25-15 win to tie the set. Ingram and Lelm both finished with five kills in the set.
The third stanza was the Colonials turn to lead from start to finish as they started the set with a 7-1 run and held on for a 25-22 victory. The Racers tried to make things interesting at the end trailing 24-19 by scoring three straight points, but a kill by Erica Robb ended that comeback bid.
With their backs against the wall, MSU came out in attack mode in the fourth set and put Robert Morris away early after taking a 15-6 lead, forcing a decisive fifth set with a 25-16 win.
Unlike the first four sets, the final was a nail biter from start to finish.  The set saw eight lead changes as neither team was able to gain more than a two-point advantage. With the Racers ahead 13-12, Ingram connected on a kill and Katlyn Hudson ended the game with a service ace to give Murray State their second Invitational championship in as many weeks.
Following the match Coach Schwepker said he was not happy with how the match started, but was proud of the way his team fought hard to the end and played its best when it mattered most.
Ingram and Lelm both set career highs for kills in the match as Ingram put down a game-high 19 and Lelm landed 17. Ingram led the defense as well, picking up 22 digs for her fourth double-double in five games. Bedard also walked away with a career-best 53 assists.
For her efforts, Ingram was named Tournament MVP. She finished the three game invitational with 44 kills, 60 digs and seven blocks. She was joined by Emily Schmahl on the All-Tournament team. Schmahl landed 25 kills to go along with 11 digs.
The Colonials had three players register double-doubles in the match, April Krivoniak (15 kills, 16 digs), Fisher (14, 27) and Robb (12, 19).Â
Murray State has a quick turnaround as they travel to Southern Illinois to battle the Salukis on Tuesday, Sept. 17. First serve is scheduled for 7 pm in Carbondale, Ill.
