The Murray State women's soccer team opened OVC play with a tough 1-0 loss to Southeast Missouri Friday afternoon at Cutchin Field.
In the first half, the teams proved to be fairly equal as each team ended the half with four shots on goal. However, the difference came just before halftime on a free kick by Christina Rhode. Rhode's kick found Amy Ward inside the six-yard box, who then tapped the ball in, to give Southeast Missouri (2-4-1, 1-0 OVC) a 1-0 lead at the break.
Each team put three more shots on goal in the second stanza, but neither was able to break through and score. The best chance for Murray State (3-4-1, 0-1 OVC) came with just under five minutes to play on a corner kick by Taylor Stevens. Shauna Wicker pulled down the ball on the corner and with the Redhawks' keeper out of place took a shot that bounced around several players, but never crossed the goal line, before being cleared out.
Wicker and Mooney each had a team-high three shots in the match, with two of Mooney's going on goal and one for Wicker. Despite the goal, Savannah Haberman ended the day with six saves, her second-highest total of the season.
On Sunday, the Racers will continue OVC play at home when they welcome UT Martin to Cutchin Field. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m. Live stats and free live video, courtesy of the OVC Digital Network, will be available for the match, with links to both at GoRacers.com,
