Women’s Soccer Opens OVC Play at Cutchin Field

For just the second time in the 14-year history of Murray State women's soccer, the Racers will open OVC play at home. MSU will kick-off its league schedule against Southeast Missouri Friday at 3 p.m., followed by UT Martin Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Racers closed out the nonconference portion of their 2013 schedule by falling at Arkansas State, 3-1, Sunday in Jonesboro. Arkansas State surged to an early 2-0 lead in the contest with goals in the seventh and 16th minutes. Katey Carmichael scored one-on-one against MSU goalkeeper Savannah Haberman after a pass from Jordan Adams for the first goal, while Loren Mitchell scored her team-high fifth goal less than 10 minutes later.
In the 34th minute, Lindey Hunt cut the Red Wolf lead in half in the 34th minute with her first goal of the season. The goal was set up by Julie Mooney who passed the ball into Hunt from the left side. Hunt then buried the ball in the net, giving Mooney her third assist of the season. However, just 1:17 into the second half Mitchell struck again, this time off a corner kick, to seal the win for ASU at 3-1.
Friday will be the 16th meeting between the Racers and the Redhawks and the eighth at Cutchin Field. The Racers currently lead the overall series, 9-6 and hold a 4-3 lead in Murray. Southeast Missouri has won each of the last three meeting in the series and the last two at Cutchin Field. . The last win in the series for MSU came in 2009 when it topped SEMO, 1-0, in Murray.
The Redhawks will enter the weekend at 1-4-1 on the year and are coming of their first win of the season. On Friday, SEMO dropped a 4-0 decision at Illinois State, but bounced back with a 2-1 overtime win at Drake Sunday.
Natasha Minor scored her team-high second goal of the season in the 85th minute to force overtime. With just 17 seconds left in the first overtime, Minor found Erin Shulman who scored for the win. Lauren Meyer entered as goalkeeper for SEMO in the second half and played an integral role in the win, by going nearly 55 minutes without allowing a goal and making nine saves.
Minor has scored two of the three SEMO goals this season, while Shulman and Christina Rhode, along with Minor, have one assist each. Ashton Aubuchon has started each game in goal for the Redhawks and has 43 saves with a goals against average of 2.86.
Prior to Sunday, Murray State and UT Martin have met 15 times previous with the Racers holding a 9-3-3 advantage. MSU has never lost to the Skyhawks at Cutchin Field, winning four of the seven meetings and tying three times. UT Martin picked up just their third-ever win in the series last season when it topped the Racers, 2-1, in Martin. The win broke a three-match unbeaten streak in the series by MSU.
The two-time defending league champs will enter the weekend with a record of 2-6-1. Last week, the Skyhawks won their second game of the year when they topped Saint Louis on the road, 1-0. Abi Sanvee broke the scoreless draw and won the game for UT Martin when she scored on a loose ball in the 83rd minute.
Sanvee leads the Skyhawks with two goals on the year, while four other players have scored one. Ellie Myrick leads UT Martin in the assists column, as she has tallied the team's lone assist on the year.
Goalkeeper Mariah Klenke is coming off a big week in which not only won OVC Goalkeeper of the week, but set the school shutout record with 11 as well. In nine starts, Klenke has made 57 saves and is currently allowing 1.38 goals per game.
