Murray State volleyball kicked off conference play with a thrilling 3-2 win over Tennessee Tech. It is the second straight year the Racers defeated the Golden Eagles to open OVC play and the team's fourth win in a row. The two teams traded sets (25-23, 19-25, 25-21, 21-25, 15-11) before Murray State (11-4, 1-0 OVC) was able to pull out the victory.
Alyssa Lelm and Taylor Olden led the Racer offense with 17 kills apiece while Scottie Ingram racked up 13. Ingram also notched her fifth straight and eighth double-double of the season by adding 18 digs. Sam Bedard centered the offense handing out 46 assists while also picking up nine digs and three kills.
Katlyn Hudson led the defensive effort with 24 digs and also landed three service aces.
The Racers took advantage of some Golden Eagles mistakes, committing six fewer attack errors (29-23) and eight fewer service errors (10-2).
In a match that saw 34 ties and 18 lead changes, set No. 1 set the stage for what was to come. A brief Murray State lead (13-10) quickly changed hands as Tennessee Tech went on a 4-0 run to reclaim the lead, 14-13. Neither team was able to gain more than a two-point lead for the remainder of the set. With the score knotted 22-all, MSU used an attack error and a Hudson ace to get to within set-point. A TTU kill forced a second set-point serve, but Ingram ended the game with a kill. Lelm jumped on the board early, collecting seven kills in the opening set.
Set No. 2 was just the same and saw each team take a number of different runs on the way to a TTU 25-19 win. Trailing 2-0, the Golden Eagles went on a 4-0 run to take their first lead of the set, 4-2. Not to be out-done, MSU followed that with a 5-0 run of their own to retake the lead, 13-11. Tennessee Tech quickly answered with another 4-0 run, putting them up by a pair, 15-13. MSU fought back to even the set at 16-16, but TTU put them away scoring nine of the next 12 points and evened the match at 1-apiece.
With the score tied 12-12 midway through set No. 3, Murray State scored seven of the next eight points to open up a 19-13 lead. The Golden Eagles staged a comeback, cutting the lead to two, 22-20, but MSU held them off long enough for a 25-21 win and 2-1 advantage in the match.
Murray State held a small lead for much of the fourth set, but up 18-16 the floodgates opened after the Racers were called for serving out of turn and the officials awarded a point to TTU. The Golden Eagles went on to score the next six points, taking a 23-18 lead and tied the match with a 25-21 win.
The fifth and final set started off wild, with seven ties and four lead changes. At 8-8, Murray State went on a 5-0 run and scored seven of the final 10 points to close the match with a 15-11 win. The Racers went on the aggressive closing the match with kills on each of their final five points, four coming from Olden.
Natalie Penrod and Ellen Conti of TTU each put down 18 kills to lead the match and Sharon Anderson had a game-high 54 assists. Courtney Smith picked up 30 digs for the Golden Eagles, to lead the match.
