The Murray State volleyball team defeated Eastern Illinois 3-1 (18-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-23) in a grueling four set match at Charleston, Illinois.
During the first set, the Panthers (7-11, 1-4 OVC) took a 13-7 lead, and would not give up the lead. The Racers (13-4, 4-1 OVC) tried to make a comeback, but Eastern Illinois would not give up the lead and took the first set 25-18.
The next three sets were close as both teams battled for the lead. During the second set, the Panthers came out strong and took the first three points, but this time the Racers would not let them continue their lead. The score continued to go back and forth until Murray State was able to take the second set 26-24 on a kill by Taylor Olden.
Like the second set, the third set started with Eastern Illinois taking the advantage. The score went back and forth until the Panthers took a 19-15 lead. However, MSU took a timeout to regroup and came back out strong, until they took the third set, 25-23.
The fourth set started with Murray State taking a 7-2 lead. Eastern Illinois tried to make a comeback, but MSU would not give up the lead still holding a 20-14 advantage. The Panthers continued to fight for the lead, but eventually Murray State was able to win the set 25-23.
Two Racers notched double-doubles. Scottie Ingram led with 20 kills while adding 12 digs. Sam Bedard turned in 46 assists along with 14 digs. Kristen Besselsen recorded a career-high 18 kills. Taylor Olden turned in 13 kills, while Ellie Lorenz helped defensively with 15 digs.
"I think Eastern Illinois is very good," said head coach David Schwepker, "we ended up pulling out the win. I was really proud of the girls."
When discussing tomorrows OVC matchup against SIU Edwardsville, Schwepker said, "I think the girls know what they have to do. It's going to be tough, but they have to be ready to go in and go hard."
