The Murray State Racers begin their 90th season of collegiate basketball Friday when they host the Houston Cougars at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky. The game will be offered free in online streaming video through OVCDigitalNetwork.com. All Murray State games are heard over free radio on WFGE Froggy 103.7 FM and online at Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com. Neal Bradley is back for his 24th season as the Voice of the Racers.
The season opener marks the first meeting between the Racers and Cougars since 1955 and the first for MSU against a member the newly formed American Athletic Conference.Â
The Murray State Racers are coming off an outstanding 2013-14 season where they rode a hot streak in postseason play all the way to the championship of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. The Racers were 23-11 and return four starters from the team that produced their fifth-straight 20-win season and 27th straight winning season. The Racers start the season in a quest for their sixth-straight 20-win season. The current five-game run is a first in MSU history.Â
At the annual Ohio Valley Conference media day in Nashville (Oct. 21), Cameron Payne was named OVC Preseason Player of the Year after he earned OVC Freshman of the Year honors last spring. Payne has also been named to the watch list for both the Bob Cousy Award and the Lou Henson Award. Seniors Jarvis Williams and T.J. Sapp were named to the All-OVC Preseason team.Â
MSU was the top pick in the preseason at OVC Media Day. MSU was picked to win the West Division and was the top overall pick. Belmont was the top pick in the OVC East Division. The Racers begin OVC play with three straight road games at Morehead State (Jan. 3), Tennessee Tech (Jan. 11) and Jacksonville State (Jan. 11). MSU's first OVC home game is against Belmont (Jan. 15).
The Racers lead the OVC with 23 regular season titles and 15 NCAA Tournament appearances. Head Coach Steve Prohm, the 2012 OVC Coach of the Year and Basketball Times National Coach of the Year, is 75-23 in his first three seasons at Murray State.Â
The Racers are looking to continue their long-running success at the CFSB Center. Entering the season, MSU carries a 15-game home win streak. MSU's only home loss last season was to Middle Tennessee 80-62 (Nov. 26). The Racers are 40-6 at home in the Prohm era and 68-8 in the last five seasons. MSU also went undefeated at home last season (8-0) in OVC play for the first time since the 2009-10 season.Â
Racer fans are invited to the Challenge In Music City in Nashville, Tenn., at Municipal Auditorium. The three-day event (Nov. 28-30), includes the Racers, Drake, Portland and Valparaiso. Each team gets three games in three days. Call the MSU ticket office at (270) 809-3000.
