Rifle Falls To UK, Tops Army in Lexington

The Murray State rifle team traveled to Lexington, Kentucky this past weekend for a pair of matches in the team's last competitions of the first half of the season. The No. 7 Racers fell to hosts and fourth-ranked Kentucky on Friday, 4684-4661, but bounced back on Saturday with a 4649-4623 win over No. 15 Army.
"I thought we did some good things," said head coach Alan Lollar. "We are getting better in some ways but we have to get more consistent in others. We are close to taking the step that could make us a very good team, right now we are a team with a lot of potential."
"This ends our fall part of the season," Lollar continued. "Now we start a new training period for the spring. We have put ourselves in pretty good position. We are a good team and we can be even better."
Against UK, the Racers trailed by just five points after small bore, 2316-2311, thanks in large part to season highs from Ben Estes, Sam Harris and Tessa Howald. However, the Wildcats had three shooters post scores of 590 or better to seal the match with a 2368-2350 victory in air rifle.
"It was a close match, with UK not pulling away until the air rifle competition," said Lollar. "We stayed with them in smallbore and had some opportunities but came up short. There were good efforts by Tessa, Ben and Sam in smallbore and air rifle saw Ivan [Roe] continue to improve with Ben also jumping back in the mix. Kaitlyn [Wilson], after a very rough start in air rifle, really had a good finish."
Howald led MSU in air rifle with a 581, while Estes and Harris had a 583 and 575, respectively. Roe led the way in air rifle with a 591, while Estes followed close behind at 587 and Wilson posted a season-best 585. Estes also had the Racers high aggregate in the match at 1170, while Tessa Howald was not far off at 1168.
On Saturday against Army, Kelsey Emme and Estes posted identical scores of 583 to lead Murray State in small bore and help give their team a 2312-2287 lead at the break. In air rifle, Army attempted to come back and topped MSU by two, 2339-2337. However, it wasn't enough to overcome the Racers' 25-point lead, as Murray State held on for the 23 point aggregate win.

Roe had another strong showing in air rifle with a team-high 589, with Howald posting the second highest score at 587. Howald and Roe ended the day with identical aggregates of 1164, while Emme followed at 1161.
The Racers will now have nearly two months off before returning to action after winter break for the second half of their season. First up for Murray State, as they begin the road to the NCAA Championships, will be their second home tri-match of the season against a pair of OVC opponents in Columbus State and UT Martin on Jan. 11.
