The Murray State basketball team picked up a much-need 66-55 win over Southeast Missouri on Wednesday at The Bank. The win keeps the Racers' chances at making the eight-team OVC tournament alive.
In the first half, the Racers (10-15, 3-10) came out on the wrong-end of a see-saw battle, as there were four lead changes and six ties in the frame. Despite shooting just 26.1 percent in the half, Murray State never trailed by more than six and kept pace with the Redhawks. With the lead at one, Southeast Missouri's Yelena Rosado made a layup with three seconds left in the frame to give her team a 27-24 lead at the break.
In the second, everything began to click for the Racers. They found their stroke both from the floor and from 3-point range, where they shot 40.0 and 30.8 percent respectively. MSU also overcame a nine rebound deficit at the half to outrebound Southeast Missouri, 47-45, for the game. In addition, they knocked down crucial free throws, making 14 of 17 in the second stanza, including a perfect 6-for-6 by Janssen Starks in the final 1:39. Finally another key was holding the SEMO offense which entered the game shooting 38.4 percent to just 27.5
With everything working for the Racers after the break, they opened the half on a 10-3 run and built on it from there. The Redhawks (8-18, 4-9) led just once after the spurt and when Netanya Jackson hit a pair of free throws with 12:48 to play, they were never able to regain it. Murray State went on to lead by as many as 13 and held on for the 11-point win.
Taylor Porter poured in a career-high 25 points, including going a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the arc, to lead the Racers for the fourth time this season. Jessica Winfrey added 18 points and 10 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season, while Jackson just missed her first, ending the game with nine points and 10 boards. Winfrey and Starks also excelled at the charity stripe, with Winfrey going 10-for-12 and Starks earning eight of her 11 points via a perfect 8-for-8 performance at the line.
The Racers will now get two days rest before traveling to league-leading UT Martin on Saturday. Tip-off at the Elam Center is scheduled for 2 p.m.
