The Murray State women's basketball team saw its post-season hopes disappear Saturday when they ran into a red-hot UT Martin team, falling 84-67 at the Elam Center in Martin.
The Skyhawks (20-7, 13-1) started the game hot, scoring 14 unanswered points to begin the game and never looked back. UT Martin did not allow Murray State (10-16, 3-11) to score until the 16:01 mark and held the Racers to 24.2 shooting in the opening frame. UT Martin finished the frame shooting an astounding 48.7 percent from the floor and took a 49-25 lead into the locker room at the break.
In the second, it was more of the same from UT Martin as they finished the game shooting 40.3 percent and led by as many 36 in the frame. The Racers did what they could, even shooting 54.2 percent in the bottom frame, but it was not enough as they fell, 84-67.
Taylor Porter led Murray State in the contest with 14 points, while Bianca Babic and Netanya Jackson followed with 13 and 10, respectively. Jessica Winfrey once again led Murray State on the boards with 11, to go along with eight points.
Heather Butler poured in a game-high 29 points to lead UTM and was followed by Ashia Jones who notched a double-double of 20 points and 11 boards. Katie Schubert also pulled down double-digit rebounds in the contest with 10, while Jasmine Newsome added 19 points of her own.
On Monday, the Racers will celebrate the careers of Jessica Winfrey and manager Thomas Pool when they welcome Morehead State to The Bank for senior night. Tip-off against the Eagles is scheduled for 7 p.m., with the senior recognition scheduled for approximately 6:45.
