Junior Matt McGowan delivered a two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning to give Murray State the lead for good as the Breds evened the series against Bowling Green with a 5-4 victory Saturday afternoon at Reagan Field.
After the Falcons (2-3) tied the game with three runs in the top of the sixth, Ty Stetson doubled to left field to put runners on second and third with two outs. McGowan took the 1-1 pitch through the left side to score both runners. A hustling Stetson slid just under the tag on a bang-bang play at the plate.
BGSU threatened to tie the game again in the seventh as they started the inning with a double. Cody Maerz took the comebacker from the next batter and got the runner at third after a short run-down. The Falcons were able to scratch across one run on a double by Jeremy Shay, but Maerz would shut the door.
Maerz (1-1) earned the victory after he allowed one run on three hits and four strikeouts over 3.2 innings.
The Breds (3-2) got on the board first as Taylor Mathews singled off the pitcher with two outs to put two on in the second. Stetson followed by driving in two runs with a triple to center field.
MSU added a run in the fifth as McGowan started the inning with a double and scored when Anthony Bayus followed with an RBI double of his own.
The Falcons tied the game in the sixth with the help of a pair of Breds errors. T.J. Losby delivered a sacrifice fly and Andrew Kubuski singled to left to tie the game. After a double put runners on second and third, Maerz entered the game and retired both hitters he faced to end the threat.
The top three hitters in the Breds lineup produced as they combined to go 6-for-11 with three doubles, a triple and all five RBIs. Stetson led the way by going 3-for-4 with a double, triple and two RBIs. McGowan went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
Cameron Finch did not factor in the decision for the second-straight start. The senior allowed three runs, two earned, on nine hits over 5.1 innings. Trevor Blaylock (0-1) took the loss for BGSU after allowing two runs on three hits over three innings. Â
The two teams will play the rubber game of the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m. MSU will start left hander Brock Downey (0-0, 7.20 ERA), while the Falcons will counter with left hander Andrew Lacinak (0-0, 0.00 ERA).
