Â
A season-low 27.4 field goal percentage led to the sixth-straight loss by the Racers, falling 86-71, last Thursday at Austin Peay. Murray State started the night off on the wrong foot, shooting just 18.8 percent in the opening stanza. In the early part of the frame, the Racers missed 10 straight shots and went over four minutes without scoring a point. Conversely, Austin Peay was a scorching 44.4 percent from the floor and took a 38-23 into the locker room at the break.
In the second half, the Racers improved by shooting 34.1 percent in the frame, but could never cut the lead into single digits. The fact that Austin Peay had the hot hand in the game did not help, as the Lady Govs shot a blistering 61.5 in the second to finish the game at 51.6 percent, a season-high for MSU opponents.
Janssen Starks led the Racers on the night with a game-high 21 points, including going a prefect 10-for-10 at the free throw line. Starks is now just the 11th player in program history to be perfect at the line in a single game with at least 10 attempts. Jessica Winfrey followed with her seventh double-double of the season by scoring 13 points and pulling down 14 boards.
Â
Monday will be the 54th meeting between Murray State and Tennessee State with MSU holding a 32-21 advantage. The Lady Tigers stopped a two-game streak by the Racers in the series last season by picking up a 67-61 win at the CFSB Center. The Racers also hold a winning record in Nashville against the Lady Tigers, leading 14-12.
Â
The Lady Tigers are coming off of a 96-61 win thrashing of Austin Peay Saturday night at home that moved them to 9-14 overall and 6-4 in the OVC. Jayda Johnson came off the bench to lead TSU with 17 points, while Chelsea Hudson notched a near doubled-double with 14 points and eight rebounds.
Hudson currently leads the Lady Tigers in both major categories with 15.7 points per game and 8.6 rebounds. Tennessee State will enter Monday averaging 70.0 points, while giving up 73.0. From the field, TSU is shooting 38.1 percent so far this season, while opponents are shooting 43.4 against them.
