The Murray State softball team did not get its OVC season off to the start it was hoping for on Saturday as it dropped both games of a doubleheader to UT Martin, 6-1 and 4-3. The games were the first-ever regular-season contests played at MSU's brand new, on-campus Racer Field.
Game 1 – UT Martin 6 (10-13-1, 1-0), Murray St. 1 (11-9, 0-1)
In game one, the Skyhawks struck first in opening stanza on an RBI-single from Kenzi Tate to make it 1-0. UT Martin furthered its lead in the second when Kelsey Dixon sent one through the right side to push the lead to 2-0. Kayla Wade and Deven Wilson would add their own RBI singles later in the inning to put the Racers at a 4-0 deficit, headed to the bottom of the second.
In the last half of the frame, Jessica Twaddle became the first Racer to record a hit at the new Racer Field when she led off the inning with a single up the middle. Two batters later, Maggie Glass cut the deficit to 4-1 with a double to left field, that scored Casey Castile.
However, that would be the only run of the game for the Racers, as UTM pitcher Elizabeth Wiegand and her defense were able shut out MSU from that point on. The Skyhawks would go on to add runs in the fifth and seventh, as they cruised to a 6-1 win.
Glass led MSU in the game by going 2-for-3 with a RBI double, while Ramsey, Alexa Becker, Leslie Bridges and Mallory Young also tallied hits. Wilson went a perfect 4-for-4 in game one for UTM with a RBI and two runs, while Dixon was 2-for-3 with a run and a RBI.
Mason Robinson (4-3) took the loss for the Racers by allowing five runs on nine hits with no walks and three strikeouts over 5.0 innings. J.J. Francis closed out the game for MSU and gave up just one run on one hit with three walks over the final two frames. Weigand picked up the win for UT Martin in the opener, as she allowed one run on seven hits with two strikeouts and a walk in her eighth complete game of the year.
Game 2 – UT Martin 4 (11-13-1, 2-0), Murray St. 3 (11-10, 0-2)
In game two, it was Murray State that was first on the board as Cayla Levins singled to center field in the third, driving in Glass, who reached on a walk, to give the Racers the early1-0 lead. On the other side of the plate, the Skyhawks had no answer for MSU pitcher CheyAnne Gaskey, as the junior held UTM hitless for the first four innings.
However, in the fifth Taylor Manning led off the stanza with her team's first hit of the game and it would only get worse from there. The Skyhawks would go on to score three runs on four hits in the inning to take a 3-1 lead.
UT Martin added another run in the sixth on an error by MSU, to push its lead to 4-1. Despite a hit from Castile in the sixth, Murray State was unable to bring her home and looked to the seventh to win the game.
In the bottom of the seventh, Shelbey Miller and Ramsey led off the inning with singles, giving MSU runners at the corners with no outs. Levins was next to the plate and laid down a perfect bunt that allowed her to reach base safely and Miller to score to make it 4-2, despite the fact Ramsey was thrown out at home.
In the next at bat, Becker reached on an error by the UTM shortstop, allowing Levins to come home in the process, to pull the Racers within one at 4-3. However, that would be as close as MSU would get after Bridges lined in to a double play that also put Becker out to end the game.
Ramsey was a perfect 3-for-3 in the second contest to lead the Racers, while Levins was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run. It was a team effort for the Skyhawks, as seven different players accounted for each of UTM's seven hits in the game.
The loss drops Gaskey's season record to 5-6, after she allowed three earned runs on seven hits, despite striking out seven and issuing no walks, over a full seven innings. UT Martin's Casey Vincent also went the distance and allowed two earned runs on seven hits with three walks and only two strikeouts en route to her first win of the season.
On Sunday, the Racers and Skyhawks will return to Racer Field to close out the three-game OVC-opening set. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
