Even though the NCAA Rifle Championships passed through Murray, Ky. two weeks ago, the season is not over for freshman Katarina Bisercic.
Bisercic is shooting in the ISSF World Cup in Fort Benning, Ga. Bisercic is representing her home nation of Serbia in the event.
"It was really exciting when Katy found out she was going to the World Cup to represent her country," said her head coach, Alan Lollar. "She has worked hard and I'm glad she got the opportunity."
The scoring works differently than a regular NCAA match, but there are still two guns – air rifle and smallbore. Bisercic completed the air rifle portion of the event on Saturday, finishing in 18th place out of 60 shooters with a score of 414.8, a personal record. She missed qualifying for the finals by 1.6 points.
On Monday, Bisercic shot in the smallbore portion. The competition took place outdoors and from a distance of 50 meters. She finished in 36th place out of 52 shooters with a score of 569.
"I knew it would be tough getting started, but once I settled down, it felt good," said Bisercic.
Coach Lollar was impressed with his student athlete, saying, "This was an extremely competitive field and shooting a personal best on that big stage is impressive. I thought she had a solid match. She has not shot outdoes in the wind since last summer. She shot her indoor 50 foot average at 50 meters outdoors in her first match, and it was on the World Cup stage. I think that says a lot about her toughness and how she prepared."
