Murray State is proud to be the host of the 2014 NCAA National Rifle Championships. This will be the ninth time that the NCAA National Championship will be held in Murray and first since 2004.
"We're honored to have been selected to host the 2014 NCAA Rifle Championships," said MSU Director of Athletics Allen Ward. "It will give us a great opportunity to not only highlight our exceptional rifle program, but also showcase this fine university on a national stage."
The eight-team competition will take place Friday and Saturday, March 14-15. The smallbore competition, taking place on Friday, will be held in the Pat Spurgin Rifle Range. Saturday's air rifle competition will take place in the main arena of the CFSB Center.
Among the teams competing will be 2013 champions and No. 1 ranked West Virginia. The 2012 and 2011 champions, TCU and Kentucky respectively, will also be two of the eight teams. Rounding out the field will be Alaska Fairbanks, Army, Jacksonville State, Memphis and Nebraska. Â
In addition to the eight teams, eight individuals qualified for the championships. MSU's Kelsey Emme will be participating in her second NCAA Championship. Emme also qualified as an individual in 2012. Emme will be one of just two individuals competing in both the smallbore and air rifle competitions. In 2014, Emme has high marks of 586 in the smallbore and 592 in the air rifle.
"Kelsey has done a great job this year. She really became solid and consistent coming down to the end of the year," said head coach Alan Lollar. "She is a quality competitor that seems to thrive in pressure situations, the bigger the match the better."
The Ohio Valley Conference will also be represented by Ethan Cole of Morehead State participating in the smallbore, and Jessica Cobb and Dacotah Faught of UT Martin in the air rifle.
Also competing as individuals will be Deanne Binnie (smallbore) and Amanda Luoma (smallbore and air rifle) of Ohio State, Meredith Carpentier (air rifle) of Air Force and Alison Weisz (air rifle) of Ole Miss.
Both days of competition will begin at 8 a.m. Fans will be allowed free admittance to the CFSB center on Friday to view a live video stream of the smallbore competition. Tickets for the air rifle competition will be sold for $5 at the CFSB Center box office or online at http://www.ticketmaster.com/Ncaa-Rifle-Championships-tickets/artist/1103061.
