The Murray State softball team will look to keep its seven-game win streak alive this weekend when it travels to Eastern Kentucky on Friday and Morehead State on Saturday,
The Racers extended their season-high win streak to seven last weekend by sweeping a three-game set at Austin Peay. MSU edged the Lady Govs, 3-2, in the opener, but cruised past then in the final two games, 12-2, in five innings and 6-0. Murray State outscored Austin Peay, 21-4, in the series and doubled up the Lady Govs in the hit category, 32-16.
Shelbey Miller had an outstanding weekend for MSU at the plate going 7-for-10 with three runs, three RBIs, two doubles and a stolen base. In the circle, Mason Robinson won two of the three games for the Racers, allowing just one earned run on seven hits with 12 strikeouts over 14 innings of work. In the finale on Sunday, Robinson picked up her third solo shutout of the week by holding the Lady Govs scoreless for seven complete innings.
MSU is currently on a seven-game winning streak, the second longest in program history. The record for the longest streak in MSU history is currently held by the 2012 team which went undefeated for nine straight games from April 21 to April 29. The streak included winning the last two games of a three-game set versus. Austin Peay, doubleheader sweeps over Bethel (TN) and Samford and a three-game sweep of Southeast Missouri, all at home.
In other notes, for just the second time in program history, the Racers are ranked in the Top 100 Rating Percentage Index (RPI), according to the latest ranking released by the NCAA on Monday. MSU is ranked 96th, up five spots from last week and is the second highest-ranked school in the league. Easter Illinois is currently the highest-ranked OVC team at 62nd, rocketing 24 spots from the previous week. The only other time Murray State has appeared in the Top 100 of the RPI was the first rankings of the 2012 season on March 25, when they clocked in at 87th.
Murray State and Eastern Kentucky have met 13 previous times, with the Racers leading, 8-5. Last season, the Colonels took two from the Racers in Murray, 12-8 and 5-4. In Richmond, the Racers hold a 4-2 advantage, winning two out of three games in both the 2010 and 2012 series.
Eastern Kentucky swept both games of a doubleheader with Belmont last Saturday in Richmond, 4-3 and 4-1, but fell in Sunday's finale, 3-1. The Colonels will enter the weekend at 22-15 overall and 10-5 in league play. Kayla Joyce had a big weekend for EKU, going 5-for-8 with a double, a walk and two stolen bases. In the circle, LeAnna Pittsenbarger appeared in all three games for EKU earning a complete-game win and a save an limiting opponents to just one earned run on three hits with 14 strikeouts over 9.1 innings.
Christina Ciolek leads EKU this season with a .347 average to go along with seven doubles, fur home runs and 23 RBIs. Pittsenbarger has served as the Colonel's ace this season in the circle where she has gone 14-7 with a 1.19 ERA, a .124 opponent's batting average and 206 strikeouts, all league-bests amongst regular starters. As a team, EKU has the lowest staff ERA in the OVC at 2.29 and the most strikeouts at 293. Offensively, the Colonels are currently batting .247 as a team and has hit 25 home runs this season, the third most in the conference.
Morehead State and Murray State have met nine times previous to Sunday, with Murray State winning six of the nine contests. The two teams split a doubleheader in Murray last season, with Morehead winning the opener, 9-2, and Murray State taking the finale, 9-4. In Morehead, the teams have played just one previous series, with MSU winnings two out of the three games.
Morehead State will enter the weekend at 8-29-1 overall and 3-12 in the OVC, after splitting a doubleheader at Dayton Thursday. The game one win by the Eagles put an and to a string of futility, as they had lost each of their last 12 games heading into the face-off with the Flyers. In game one, Morehead State rallied from a 3-0 deficit to win, 4-3, but fell behind 4-0 in game two and came up just shy even with a seventh-inning rally at 4-3. Katie Raile went 3-for-4 in game in game one with an RBI and was 1-for-3 in game two with a run, a RBI and a home run.
Raile currently leads the Eagles offensively with a.286 average, eight runs, six walks and team-highs of 30 hits and 19 RBIs. In the circle, Megan Tymorek and Tanna Seuferer are splitting the duties fairly evenly with Tymorek getting 16 starts in 24 appearances and Seuferer getting 17 starts in 21 appearances. Currently, Tymorek is 4-12 on the year with a 6.12 ERA, 55 strikeouts and a .355 opponent's batting average, while Seuferer has limited opponents to a .350 clip, has struck out 34 batters, is 3-13 and has an ERA of 6.22.
