Two-Out Runs Costly in Series Finale

Eastern Illinois got three home runs from Brant Valach and scored each of their last 10 runs with two outs in handing Murray State a 14-3 defeat in the rubber game of the three-game series Sunday afternoon at Reagan Field.
Valach helped the Panthers (9-22, 4-8 OVC) to the early lead by hitting a solo home run in the second, a two-run shot in the fourth and a three-run homer in the fifth. EIU also got a big day from leadoff hitter Caleb Howell, 4-for-5, three RBIs and Frankie Perrone, 2-for-5, three RBIs.
The Breds (14-15, 8-7 OVC) pushed across two runs in the second inning after Kollin Dowdy and Michael Hargrove singled to put runners on the corners. After a walk to Dalton West loaded the bases, Clay Kelly and Ty Stetson each received walks with the bases loaded.
MSU scored its only other run in the sixth inning as Taylor Mathews singled up the middle and scored on Stetson's double to right center. It was the second double of the game for Stetson as he finished 2-for-3 with a pair of walks and two RBIs.
The Breds continued to threaten throughout the game, but could not push any runs across. They stranded 11 runners on base and hit into a pair of double plays.
Joe Greenfield (4-3) picked up the victory after giving up three runs on nine hits over six innings. Chase Thurston earned his first save after walking two and striking out three over three hitless innings. Sheldon Baxter (1-2) took the loss after allowing seven runs, four earned, on eight hits over five innings.
The Breds return to the diamond Wednesday evening as they travel to face Ole Miss. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
