Last weekend, the Racers went 3-1 with a split of Tennessee Tech and a sweep of Jacksonville State. Freshman Taylor Odom helped power MSU with a breakout weekend that earned her adidas® OVC Player of the Week honors. The Goreville, Ill., native helped power MSU to a 4-2 week by going 5-for-8 at the plate for a .625 average. She finished the week with four runs, six RBIs, three walks, two doubles, a triple, a home run and a stolen base.
Over the five-game span, the rookie put together an impressive .727 on-base percentage and an astounding 1.500 slugging percentage. In game one against Tennessee Tech on Saturday, she went a perfect a 2-for-2 with two RBIs, two runs, a triple and her first-ever collegiate home run. On Sunday, she went 2-for-2 again in the final game against Jacksonville State with a three-RBI double, as well as a walk.
Prior to Wednesday, Evansville has taken on the Racers on 10 previous occasions, with the Purple Aces leading the series, 6-4. Murray State has won the last two games in the series, taking the back end of a doubleheader at Evansville, 6-3, in 2013 and winning 6-0 at Memphis' Blues City Classic earlier this season. The two teams have met on just once before in Murray, splitting a doubleheader in 2010.
Evansville will enter Wednesday at 15-19 on the season and have lost five of their last six games. The Purple Aces dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker at Louisville on Tuesday, after dropping two of three in a conference set at home against Wichita State last weekend. Kayla Fortner and Susan Norris hit doubles in the seventh to force Louisville to extra innings, only to fall to the Cardinals on a walk-off RBI-single in the eighth.
Megan Gurski currently leads the Purple Aces on the season with a .369 average, five doubles, a triple, 15 runs and a team-high 23 RBIs. Fortner follows at .295 with 21 RBIs, six doubles and team-highs of 20 runs, 20 walks and eight home runs.
