Volleyball Drops A Pair At Valpo Tournament

The Murray State volleyball squad concluded their weekend play at the Valparaiso Crossroads of America Tournament in Valparaiso, Indiana.
MSU lost a pair of matches Saturday to George Washington 1-3 (25-18, 15-25, 20-25, 8-25) and Sacramento State 1-3 (25-16, 10-25, 20-25, 23-25).
Murray State sophomore Ellie Lorenz was named to the All-Tournament team.
Here is a recap of the two games as the Racers (9-3) look forward to their home and Ohio Valley Conference Opener Friday. MSU welcomes Southeast Missouri to Racer Arena for a 7 p.m. start.
Game One – George Washington 1-3 (25-18, 15-25, 20-25, 18-25)
The Racers and Colonials played four tight sets and the first set was 11-11 when MSU scored the next six points for a 17-11 lead. MSU kept the lead all the way and took the first set 25-18.
GW led 7-3 at the start of the second set and MSU dropped it 25-15.
The third set was again close with MSU getting a pair of points after a timeout to the cut the GW lead to 19-18. However, GW took the next five points to go up 24-19 and they won the third set 25-20.
In the fourth set, the Racers were down early 14-7 and GW closed out the set 25-18 and the game 3-1.
Kristen Besselsen led the Racers with 13 kills, followed by Alyssa Lelm who added eight. Sam Bedard gave the Racers 36 assists to go along with nine digs. Lorenz had a team-high 12 digs.
Game Two – Sacramento State 1-3 (25-16, 10-25, 20-25, 23-25)
The first set started with MSU jumping on top 8-4 and they blitzed Sacramento State 25-16.
The Hornets came back in the second set and led MSU 14-6 after a run of eight-straight points. Sacramento State held MSU to only 10 points and took the second set 25-10.
Murray State took a quick 6-3 advantage in set three, but Sacramento State regained the lead and won the set 25-20.
Trying to stay alive in the fourth set, the Racers led 12-8. But after the Hornets came back to tie the set 13-13, they finished it off 25-23 to beat the Racers 3-1.
Lorenz tied her career-high digs with 25. Bedard led the Racers with 24 assists, while Scottie Ingram added 10 kills.
