The Murray State men's and women's basketball teams participated in the Walk To Defeat ALS (Sept. 20) on the campus of Murray State University.
The event at the CFSB Center, was organized the local chapter from Murray-Calloway County of ALS Kentucky. There were 30 teams involved in this year's event and more than 600 walkers were part of the day. The event raised more than $110,000 to help in the fight of ALS.
"It was great to have the MSU basketball teams participate in the ALS Walk," Said event chairman Scott Benson. ""We enjoyed having the Racers there and they helped us early on by doing the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Them being there really generated greater interest. The women's team helped us at the start and finish line and runners got their photos taken with some of the men's players as they were getting their medals. The Good Lord blessed us with good weather."
The Murray-Calloway County event is different than most in that there is also a 5K run. More than 70 runners participated.
"It was good to have our team at the ALS walk," MSU women's coach Rob Cross said. "As a team, we seek out ways to connect with our community and the ALS walk was something we were honored to be part of."
"We always want to support our community and we're glad to have been part of it," MSU men's coach Steve Prohm said. "Our team was happy to be part of a great cause in the fight against ALS."
ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) is commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a crippling muscular disease for which there is no cure. Gehrig was a Baseball Hall of Fame player for the New York Yankees in the 1930's whose life was cut short by ALS.
