Racers Fall At Austin Peay
9/30/2014 8:42:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
The Murray State volleyball team suffered its first OVC loss of the season on Tuesday evening falling, 3-0, to arch rival Austin Peay at the Dunn Center in Clarksville, Tennessee.
The first set was a typical match-up between the two schools, with points trading back and forth and neither team giving an inch. Finally, the Lady Govs (8-10, 3-0 OVC) put some distance between themselves and the Racers and jumped out to a 17-10 lead. Murray State did attempt a comeback, but it was not enough as Austin Peay took the first set, 25-20.
In the second, Murray State (11-4, 2-1 OVC) jumped out to a big lead and looked to be in striking distance of the win at 20-13. However, the home crowd got their team back into it and the Lady Govs pushed forward and tied the set at 23. APSU then picked up the next two points to claim the second set victory and take a 2-0 match lead.
In the third and deciding set, Murray State jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but once again Austin Peay battled back. After tying the match at 10, the Lady Govs outscored MSU 15-7 down the stretch to capture the set and the 3-0 match sweep.
Scottie Ingram led the MSU offense with 10 kills, while Taylor Olden and Kristen Besselsen had eight each. Ellie Lorenz led the team in kills with 14, while Sam Bedard turned in 30 assists. Ingram and Bedard each finished the match with double-double with Ingram adding 11 digs to her kills and Bedard doing the same to her assists.
On Saturday, the Racers will return to Racer Arena to take on Eastern Kentucky. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
