Rifle Splits Weekend On The Road
1/19/2015 4:00:00 PM | Rifle
The eighth-ranked Murray State rifle team split a pair of road matches on the weekend, topping No. 20 Columbus State for the second time in as many weeks, 4671-4553, but falling at No. 3 Jacksonville State, 4677-4649.
"We did a great job on Saturday at Columbus State. Ivan [Roe] had an outstanding day and we competed well as a team," said head coach Alan Lollar. "Sunday was tougher. We got off to a rocky start and battled back, but Jacksonville State is a legit top four team and you just can't give them a chance like we did. However, now it is back to training to try and clean some things up and make our strengths more consistent."
The Racers were just one off of their season-high at Columbus State, shooting a 2316 in smallbore and a season-high 2355 in air rifle. Ivan Roe turned in a 584 in smallbore which ties MSU's individual season-high and is a personal best. Roe also turned in the team's top air file score of the year at 594. Roe finished the match with a total score of 1178, which beats his previous personal best and the previous team best of 1175.
Bes Estes followed Roe in smallbore at 580, while Kelsey Emme and Estes were close behind him in air rifle at 589 and 588, respectively. Estes fired 588 in air rifle, besteing his previous personal-high by one point.
At Jacksonville State, the Racers shot at season-low 2303 in smallbore and even a respectable 2346 in air rifle was not enough to push them past Jax State's 4677.
Emme and Estes led MSU in smallbore in the match at 578, while Emme tied her season-high in air rifle at 591. Keri Marlin followed Emme and Estes at 574 in smallbore, while Roe turned in MSU's second highest air rifle score of the day at 587.
Murray State now returns home on Jan. 23-25 to host the Withrow invitational at the Pat Spurgin Rifle Range in Murray. Scheduled to compete with the Racers in this year's event are No. 3 Jacksonville State, No. 6 Kentucky, No. 9 Memphis, No. 15 UT Martin, No. 17 Ole Miss, No. 19 North Georgia, UTEP, UAB and Rose-Hulman.
