Rifle Closes Regular Season With Huge Win

The eighth-ranked Murray State rifle team got a huge win this past weekend when it won the 2015 Roger Withrow Open at Pat Spurgin Rifle Range in Murray. The Racers shot a season-high 4687 to best nine other teams, including No. 3 Kentucky and No. 5 Jacksonville State.
"We put in a week of hard training and it paid off," said head coach Alan Lollar. "This was a team effort. Everyone performed like I knew they could and we stepped up in a big way."
In smallbore, Murray State posted its highest score in over six years with a 2329, beating its closest competitor by nine points. In air rifle, the Racers shot a 2358, coming up just two-points shy of the event leader Kentucky, but posting MSU's best score in the event since 2010.
Despite not being squaded, Sam Harris blew his previous of best of 575 in smallbore out of the water by posting a 590, the second-highest score of the weekend. Harris posted a 97 and a 100 in the kneeling position, was perfect in the prone position with two 100s and had a 96 and a 97 in the standing position.
Tessa Howald led the squaded shooters with a career-high 586, while Kelsey Emme and Ben Estes followed at 583 each. Ivan Roe turned in a 574, while Hannah Harris shot one off of her season-high at 573.
Roe led the way for Murray State in air rifle at 593, while Howald shot a 590. Estes shot a career-high 589 on the weekend and was followed by Emme and Robert Broadstreet at 587 and 583, respectively, who rounded out the scoring for the Racers. Hannah Harris also posted a new caeer best in the discipline with a 588, five more than her previous career-high.
Howald also posted the best aggregate of her career at 1176 in the event, one up from her previous high and was joined in the feat by Hannah Harris who raised her high total from 1157 to 1161. Ben Estes shot an 1172 total to beat his previous mark by two and Sam Harris finished with an 1157, also two more than his previous best.
Murray State will now take one week off before traveling to Jacksonville, Alabama Feb. 7 for the 2015 OVC Championship. The Racers will then return home Feb. 21 to host an NCAA qualifier. Following the qualifier, the nation's top eight teams and selected individuals will converge on Fairbanks, Alaska March 13-15 for the 2015 NCAA Rifle Championship.
