Rifle Continues To Impress At Buckeye Open

The top-ranked Murray State rifle team set a school record in air rifle Saturday at Ohio State's 2015 Buckeye Open with a 2368 at Converse Hall in Columbus. Paired with a 2331 in smallbore, the Racers finished with a total score of 4699, the second best total in program history.
The Racers' 4699 was enough to beat the eighth-ranked host Buckeyes, who shot a 4676, and 11th-ranked Nevada, which shot a 4640. However, MSU must wait until the conclusion of the event on Sunday to see if they won, as fourth-ranked TCU and 17th-ranked Morehead State are still to compete.
"I was very happy with the way we handled going on the road, staying focused and shooting our match," said head coach Alan Lollar. "The road has its own distractions and in order to be a great team, you have to mature and learn to deal with them and I think we are moving through that process step-by-step. It is really exciting to watch this team, as they are working hard and accepting challenges as they come. As a coach, I can't ask for anything better."
Ivan Roe led all shooters on the day with a career best 1181, shooting a 588 in smallbore and a 593 in air rifle. MacKenzie Martin shot the day's best air rifle score at 594, to end the day with an aggregate of 1173, after shooting a 579 in smallbore.
Ben Estes shot a 583 smallbore and a 589 air rifle to follow Martin at 1172, while Barbara Schläpfer was just two shots off of Martin at 1171 with a 581 and 590, respectively. Tessa Howald had a 574 in smallbore and a 591 in air rifle to round out the squaded shooters at 1165, while Alathea Sellars used a 576 smallbore and a 588 air rifle to finish with an 1164.
Murray State will return to action Sunday, when they take on Morehead State in a dual match at Converse Hall in Columbus.
