The fifth-ranked Murray State rifle team shot a 4676 for the second consecutive week, which was good enough for second place at the 2015 Ole Miss Invitational this weekend in Oxford, Mississippi. Third-ranked TCU won the event with a 4696, while 10th-ranked Memphis shot a 4668 to clip No. 8 JSU and finish in third. The Racers shot on Friday, but had to wait until the even finished on Sunday to see where they finished.
"I was happy with the effort and focus we had, coming off a short week," said head coach Alan Lollar. "Now, we have some specific things we need to work on before we host a very good Kentucky squad."
Ben Estes led Murray State in the Invitational with an aggregate score of 1174, just one off of his career high. "I was happy with smallbore and glad I could have a consistent weekend with in both events," said Estes. The sophomore was two-off his career-best in smallbore at 585 and one off in air rifle at 588.
Senior Ryan Limpus and freshman MacKenzie Martin followed Estes in smallbore at 581 each, while Ivan Roe and Hannah Harris rounded out the squaded shooters in the event for MSU at 577 and 570, respectively.
The freshman duo of Martin and Alathea Sellars led the Racers in air rifle, with both firing a 589. Roe followed close behind with a 586, while Tessa Howald also had a good day with a 584. Martin finished with the second highest aggregate of the day for Murray State at 1170, while Roe turned in a solid 1163.
Murray State will now take two weeks off before returning to action on Oct. 17 at home, when it hosts fourth-ranked Kentucky at Pat Spurgin Rifle Range.
