All-Time Series vs. ISU: Series is tied 1-1
Last Meeting: MSU 65, ISU 55 (Dec. 1, 2001)
The Murray State women's basketball team heads to Illinois State for its second consecutive road contest Wednesday in a 7 p.m. tip from Redbird Arena. The Racers are coming off a 76-59 win Sunday over Alabama A&M in Hunstville. Ke'Shunan James led MSU with a season-high 29 points. LeAsia Wright and Bria Bethea added 17 and 11 points, respectively, while Jasmine Borders hit three consecutive 3-pointers in the second half to help push the Racers out to a big lead.
James earned a pair of weekly honors for her performance last week for the Racers against Oakland City and AAMU. James was named both the ADIDAS OVC Player of the Week and College Sports Madness' OVC Player of the Week as she averaged 27.5 points, six rebounds, 4.5 steals and 2.5 assists per game in the two victories.
MSU is looking for its first 3-0 start since 2009-10 when the Racers won their first four games of the season. That was also the last time the Racers won their first two road games of the season, when they won at Alabama A&M and Memphis. This will be just the third meeting all-time between the Redbirds and Racers and just the second game played in Normal. The first game of the series was played at Illinois State back in 1976, a game in which ISU won 58-44.
The Redbirds enter the contest having played just their season opener this year. In ISU's opener, it was defeated by Bowling Green 70-52 on the road. Octavia Crump led Illinois State with 19 points and five rebounds in the loss. Shakeela Fowler was the only other Redbird in double figures, scoring 10 points. The Redbirds were held to 32.8 percent shooting in the loss and went just 2-of-17 from 3-point range. ISU is led by third-year head coach Barb Smith and is looking to improve upon its 2-28 record last season.
Wednesday's contest can be followed along on the usual media outlets and will also be streamed live on ESPN 3.
