The Murray State women's basketball team returns to the CFSB Center for the first time in three games looking to snap an early season skid, Wednesday when Southern Illinois comes to "The Bank". Wednesday's contest will be just the third home game for the Racers this season.
The Racers are coming off a 50-40 loss Saturday at Central Arkansas. LeAsia Wright led MSU with 19 points in the loss while Kyra Gulledge pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds. It was the third time this season that Gulledge has grabbed 11 boards. Due to the Sugar Bears' slow tempo, the Racers had season-lows in multiple offensive categories in the loss. MSU's last home game also came against UCA, a 61-51 loss back on Nov. 21.
The duo of Ke'Shunan James and Wright has led the way for the Racers this season as the two lead the team in scoring, averaging 18 and 16.7 points per game, respectively. Wright also leads the team with 18 assists while James' 17 helpers are second on the squad. The two are also the team leaders in steals with 17 (Wright) and 14 (James). The duo is also second and third on the team in rebounding as James averages 6.3 per and Wright pulls down 4.8 a game.
The Salukis are led by one of the Missouri Valley's top players in Dyana Pierre who is averaging 13.8 points and 12 rebounds per game this season. Pierre has two double-doubles on the season and scored 27 points and pulled down 21 boards in SIU's overtime win over Tennessee State Nov. 21. Rishonda Napier leads the team averaging 14.8 points per game and leads the Salukis shooting 36.4 percent from 3-point range. Cartaesha Macklin leads the team averaging just under four assists per game. Kylie Giebelhausen and Napier are the only two Salukis that have started in all five games this year. As a team, SIU is shooting 41.6 percent from the floor. SIU is 1-1 this year against the OVC, the win over TSU and a loss (70-63) to UT Martin. The Salukis are led by Head Coach Cindy Stein who is in her third season.
Wednesday's game will be the first of three home contests in the month of December for the Racers. MSU will host Blue Mountain Dec. 14 and Lindenwood-Belleville in an exhibition Dec. 30.
