Rifle Solid at NCAA Qualifiers
2/22/2015 10:26:00 PM | Rifle
The Murray State rifle team used its second-best smallbore score of the year to turn in a solid 4668 at the NCAA Qualifier at Pat Spurgin Rifle Range in Murray, Kentucky. The Racers shot a 2321 in smallbore, followed by a 2347 in air rifle.
"I thought it was a nice strong finish for the regular season," said head coach Alan Lollar. "We have to wait for official word, but we feel good about our chances."
"We had to overcome some obstacles this weekend," Lollar continued. "Starting with the weather that threw training into disarray, the team handled some physical and mental distractions like champs."
Tessa Howald shot a 583 in smallbore and 589 in air rifle to finish with a team-high aggregate of 1172. Ivan Roe followed Howald with a 579 and a 586 for a total of 1165. Hannah Harris also a good outing with a 578 in smallbore, while Bobby Broadstreet had a 589 in air rifle.
"Hannah and Bobby both stepped up on a big weekend and showed that hard work and dedication pays off," said Lollar. "Kelsey, Tessa, Ivan and Ben performed like they have all year, together, as a team."
Ben Estes used a 581 in smallbore and a 583 in air rifle to score an 1164 aggregate. Meanwhile, enior Kelsey Emme shot a 577 in smallbore and a 582 in air rifle to end her final qualifier with an 1159.
"I cannot say enough about my only senior, Kelsey Emme," said Lollar. "Four years of commitment and training has paid off. She had two trips to the NCAA Championships by herself and I know she really wanted to get there this time with her team. I hope she gets another match and another chance to compete."
Murray State will now wait to see if their scores were good enough to qualify for one of eight spots in the 2015 NCAA Rifle Championships in Fairbanks, Alaska March 13-14. The Racers will find out their fate on Thursday at 4 p.m. CT by way of a live selection show on NCAA.com.
