Smith Leads Racer Golf In Arizona Event

Jordan Smith turned in a 36^th place finish to lead the Murray State men's golf team in the spring opener at the Loyola Invitational.

The 54-hole event was played at Palm Valley Golf Course in Goodyear, Arizona.

Smith, a senior from Murray, Kentucky, fired rounds of 73-76-75=224 to have MSU's top finish of 36^th place in the field of 92 competitors.

The Racers carded rounds of 298-305-305=908 to finish 11^th in the field of 17 teams. MSU finished ahead of 12^th place Southern Illinois (910) and 13^th place St. John's (911).

MSU's Duncan McCormick placed 56^th with rounds of 75-73-80=228, while Matthew Zakutney finished 63^rd with scores of 79-79-72=230. Zakutney's 72 in the final round was MSU's low round of the tournament. Jared Gosser (73-81-79=233) and Preston French (77-77-79=233) shared 70^th place. Brock Simmons played the event as an individual and placed 67^th with scores of 79-77-75=231.

Utah Valley was the winner with an 868, ahead of Utah (874), Gonzaga (874), DePaul (875) and UMKC (878). The rest of the top-10 included: Missouri (880), Seton Hall (886), Loyola-Maryland (889), Connecticut (892) and Air Force (902).

The Palm Valley course played to a par-72 and 7,015 yards.
The Racers' next event is the Grover Page Classic (March 9-10) at Jackson Country Club in Jackson, Tenn.
