The Grover Page Classic men's golf tournament in Jackson, Tennessee was washed away by rain Tuesday as the Murray State Racers did manage to get in 36 holes Monday.
Â
With no golf played Tuesday, the tournament was decided on yesterday's play and it led to MSU's Jordan Smith taking his first collegiate victory as he shared the title with UT Martin's Brendan Cabellero and Eastern Kentucky's Taylor Riggs.
Â
Smith, a senior from Murray, fired rounds of 71-70 and finished with a 3-under-par 141. Â
Â
"He has been playing great all year," said Murray State Head Coach Eddie Hunt. "Jordan is playing at an All-Conference level since the fall. I am excited to see how the rest of the spring goes for him. The best part of his game right now is that he's consistent in every area. He's not having any bad holes out here that can ruin a good round. He's getting the ball in play off the tee and giving himself chances to score around the greens."
Â
The Racers finished fourth in the field of 12 teams with scores of 288-292=580 tied with Lee University and one shot ahead of sixth place Southern Illinois at 581.
Â
MSU's Jared Gosser scored rounds of 70-74=144 and placed 10th, while Duncan McCormick had rounds of 74-72=146 for a spot in 17th place. Preston French placed 28th with scores of 73-76=149 and Matthew Zakutney carded scores of 80-78=158 for a spot in 61st place.
Â
MSU's Brock Simmons and Myles Morrissey played the event as individuals. Simmons finished 36th with scores of 74-76=150 and Morrissey was in 48th place after rounds of 82-71=153.
Â
The Racers get back on the course at the Bobby Nichols Invitational (March 16-17) at Sevierville Country Club in Sevierville, Tennessee.
