Rifle Takes Second at OVC Championship

The Murray State rifle team shot a 2341 in air rifle to finish the 2015 OVC Rifle Championship in second place Sunday at the Gamecock Rifle Range in Jacksonville, Alabama. The Racers finished the air rifle portion of the event 10 points behind winners Jacksonville State, to come up just 18 points shy of the title.
"The weekend was a learning experience for the shooters that have never shot in a conference championship," said head coach Alan Lollar. "This is valuable experience for the rest of this year and next year it will be invaluable."
"I thought we performed well in some spots but mistakes and decision-making hurt us at times," Lollar continued." "Some of that comes from the distraction of the championship. However, we will be back on the training range Tuesday preparing for the NCAA qualifier in two weeks."
Ivan Roe led Murray State with a 588, while Kelsey Emme shot a 587. Tessa Howald and Bobby Broadstreet each shot a 583, while Ben Estes rounded out the squad at 582.
Following the event, Estes and Roe received All-Newcomer honors in both events, while Broadstreet earned a spot on the air rifle All-Newcomer team. In addition, Roe was named OVC Freshman of the Year.
In All-Conference honors, Emme, Broadstreet and Howald all picked up nods on the second team for air rifle. For first team, Emme and Estes earned spots for smallbore, while Roe was named first-team in air rifle.
When it came to the big awards, the Racers were well-represented with Estes being named OVC Smallbore Athlete of the Year. Along with Estes' award, Lollar was named Co-Coach of the Year, along with JSU's Ron Frost, marking the third time in his career that he has earned the honor.
The Racers will return to action in two weeks on Feb. 21 at home for the NCAA Qualifier.
