This Week
The Racers play their first true road series in OVC play as MSU and SIU Edwardsville play a three-game series beginning Saturday. The series was pushed back a day due to expected rain all day Friday in Edwardsville. SIUE swept all three games from the Racers last season in Murray.
Last Game
Murray State split a doubleheader with Northern Illinois Wednesday at Southern Illinois University, losing game one 6-4 and scoring a season-high 12 runs in a 12-4 victory in game two. The Cougars lost 9-4 at Missouri Wednesday.
Lawrence Named to Bench Award Watch List
Sophomore catcher Tyler Lawrence was named to the Johnny Bench Award Watch List, given annually to the top catcher in Division I. Lawrence is the only Racers to start in all 17 games this season and he leads the team in multiple offensive categories, including RBIs (11), extra-base hits (8), walks (9) and runs scored (9). Lawrence is also second on the team with two home runs and a .304 batting average.
Grand Slam Part II
Kipp Moore became the second Racer this season to hit a grand slam (Lawrence) in a game. Moore went deep in MSU's victory over Northern Illinois Wednesday in the seventh inning, pushing the Racers' lead to 10-4 in the five-run inning. It was Moore's first career homer.
Strong Out of the 'Pen
The Murray State bullpen was lights-out against NIU Wednesday. In the two games, the Racers' relief pitchers went eight innings and allowed just one run on one hit while striking-out 10 batters. Cody Maerz picked-up his second win of the season in Murray's game two win.
Scouting SIUE
The Cougars are led offensively by Keaton Wright who is hitting a team-high .382 on the season while Dustin Woodcock and Austin Verschoore are hitting .359 and .313, respectively. Parker Guinn leads the team with nine RBI this season.
Both Guinn and Woodcock have two home runs to lead the Cougars while Nick Lombardo leads the team with six extra-base hits in 2015. The Cougars have attempted just 13 stolen bases on the year and have been successful eight times. Lombardo and Denton Reed each have two steals.
Caleb Wilkerson leads the SIUE pitching staff with an ERA of 3.00 in six innings of work. Ryan Daniels leads the squad logging 17 innings this season while Zach Malach leads the Cougars with 14 strikeouts. Three players lead the team with one win each.
