Big Inning Leads to Series Opening Loss to SIUE

An SIU Edwardsville five-run fourth inning proved to be the deciding blow as the Murray State baseball team dropped the series opener with the Cougars 8-5 Saturday in Edwardsville, Ill.
The Racers (6-12, 2-2 OVC) got on the board first with a Tyler Lawrence RBI single in the top of the first inning that scored Anthony Bayus. It is the seventh time this season the Racers have scored in the first inning and makes them 3-4 when doing so.
SIUE (4-9, 4-0 OVC) responded in the second inning with a pair of runs to take a 2-1 lead and after a scoreless third and top of the fourth, the Cougars busted the game open with five runs in the fourth to push the lead to 7-1.
Murray State would rally however, scoring two runs in the fifth to make it 7-3. The Racers got their first run of the inning with another RBI from Lawrence as he grounded-out to second to bring home Matt McGowan. Matthew Johnson, who reached on a double, came around to score on a wild pitch for the Racers.
After another Cougar run made it 8-3, the Racers got another two runs, this time in the sixth as Derek Yoder tripled to right to score Taylor Mathews. Nick Moore's ground-out to the shortstop brought home Yoder to make it 8-5 in favor of SIUE. A three-run deficit was all the closer the Racers would get however as the SIUE bullpen held Murray State without a hit in the final three innings of the contest.
The Cougars recorded 14 hits in the game while the Racers collected seven hits. Johnson went 3-for-5 in the loss with a double to lead the Racer offense. Skyler Geissinger went 4-for-4 with three RBIs to lead SIUE in batting.
Brock Downey got the start on the mound and the loss for the Racers, dropping him to 2-3 on the season. Downey allowed six earned runs on 10 hits in five innings of work. Paul Miller came on in the sixth inning and pitched three shutout innings and allowed four hits.
Game two of the series is Sunday at Lee Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
