NCAA Rifle: MSU Seventh; Estes Competes In Finals

The Murray State rifle team finished the first day of the 2015 NCAA Rifle Championship with a smallbore score of 2296 Friday at the E.F. Horton Rifle Range in Fairbanks, Alaska. The score placed the Racers in seventh out of eight teams, but still within striking distance of the title with one day to go.
Ben Estes and Ivan Roe kicked off the day in teh first relay with a 587 and a 572. Estes' score was four better than his career-high and after all shooters were finished, it remained as the best score of the day. In the finals, Estes could not maintain his momentum and finished eighth of eight with a score of 397.7. Rachel Martin of Nebraska won the individual title with a score 453.3.
Kelsey Emme was second for MSU in the event with a 574, while Hannah Harris rounded out the squaded shooters at 563. Tessa Howald also shot for Murray State Friday and finished with a 559.
Murray State finished the day just two points behind sixth-place Kentucky and six points behind fellow OVC member Jacksonville State. Host Alaska-Fairbanks leads the event after day one with a 2331, well in front of second-place and defending champion West Virginia at 2319.
The 2015 NCAA Rifle Championship will conclude Saturday with the air rifle portion of the event. Roe will compete in Relay 1 at 11 a.m. CDT, with Howald and Harris following in Relay 2 at 1:15 p.m. CDT. Emme and Estes will finish it out for the Racers in the day's final relay at 3:30 p.m. Should any of the Racers' individual scores finish in the top eight, they would advance to the finals, set for approximately 2:45 p.m. CDT.
