Offense Sputters in 2-1 Loss Against Governors
3/21/2015 5:24:00 PM | Baseball
Brad Boegel had his best outing of the season for the Racers, pitching 8.1 innings and allowing just one earned run off six hits while striking-out five, but it was not enough as Murray State lost game two of its series with Austin Peay, 2-1 Saturday afternoon at Reagan Field.
The Racers (7-16, 3-5 OVC) were held to five hits in the loss and left eight runners stranded on the bases against APSU (11-8, 5-3 OVC). After collecting three hits in the first two innings, MSU went hitless in the third through the seventh. Tyler Lawrence's two-out single up the middle in the bottom of the eighth finally broke the cold streak for the Racers.
The Governors got on the board first in the third inning when Clayton Smithson scored from second on a Murray State error. APSU added an insurance run in the top of the ninth on a Cacye Bredlau single through the right side. The Racers were able to limit Austin Peay to just one run on the hit as Brock Downey was able to throw out Chase Hamilton at home plate.
The Racers' lone run came via error as Derek Yoder was able to score from second base on the Nick Moore at-bat with one out in the ninth. Yoder was able to reach to lead off the inning with a double to left field. It was MSU's lone extra-base hit of the loss. Taylor Mathews and Dalton West both struck-out to end the inning and the game as AJ Gaura picked up his third save of the season for Austin Peay.
Anthony Bayus, Kipp Moore and Matthew Johnson collected the other three hits in the game for the Racers. Bayus was also able to draw a walk while Mathews drew two free passes. Boegel drops to 0-2 on the year with the loss.
The rubber game of the series will be Sunday at Reagan Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
