The Racers open OVC play with a three-game set against UT Martin in Edwardsville, Ill. The series was shifted from Reagan Field to Edwardsville due to the high snow accumulation in Murray. This will be the first time since 2011 that the Racers won't open conference play against Morehead State. MSU has won six of its last seven meetings against the Skyhawks.
Last Week
The Racers lost both games of a doubleheader at Kentucky on Tuesday, losing game one 4-1 and falling in game two 4-3. UT Martin has not played since Feb. 24 when they traveled to top-five ranked Vanderbilt and were defeated 16-3.
West Goes Long Twice
Murray State first baseman Dalton West homered twice (once in each game) in the Racers' two games against UK. In game one, West went deep in the seventh inning and hit his second homer of the day in the second inning of game two. Both were solo blasts. All six of West's hits this season have been for extra bases (three doubles, three home runs).
Racers Add a Game
Murray State has added an additional midweek contest to its schedule as the Racers will host Lindenwood-Belleville April 8 at Reagan Field beginning at 3 p.m.
Starting OVC Play Strong
The Racers will look to make it four straight OVC-opening wins this weekend against UT Martin. The Racers last lost their first game of conference play back in 2011 against Austin Peay, losing 5-2.
Scouting UT Martin
The Skyhawks enter OVC play having lost seven consecutive games after winning their season opener over Texas-Pan American.
UT Martin is led by Nico Zych who is second in the OVC hitting .517 on the season. Zych is one of five on the squad to have hit a home run in 2015 and is tied for second the squad with four RBIs. Taylor Douglas and Matt Hirsch lead the team with five RBI each. Andrew Castillo leads UTM with six runs scored. Chris Roe leads the team with a 0.00 ERA in two innings of work in 2015. Carter Smith has the lone win on the season for the Skyhawks, recording a 0.84 ERA and has pitched 10.2 innings while striking-out 13 batters. Alex Martin leads the team with 17 punch-outs.
The Skyhawks are led by first-year Head Coach Rick Robinson. Robinson recorded nearly 700 wins at Division II power Young Harris in 16 seasons.
