Racers Split With UTM to Open OVC Play

Tyler Lawrence delivered an RBI double to right field to score Brock Downey in the eighth inning of Murray State's 2-1 victory over UT Martin in game two of the doubleheader today against the Skyhawks played in Edwardsville, Ill. The Racers lost game one of the day 6-3 to open OVC play.
There wasn't a lot of action to begin game two as the two teams went scoreless into the fifth inning when UT Martin (2-8, 1-1 OVC) scored on a Matt Hirsch brought in Jake Deason with a bases-loaded walk to make it 1-0.
The Racers (4-10, 1-1 OVC) responded in the bottom of the sixth on a Nick Moore sacrifice fly RBI that scored Downey. In the eighth, Downey reached on a single and advanced to second on a throwing error to setup the game-winning run. Downey finished the game with two hits while Dalton West recorded the Racers' other hit in the win. UTM collected six hits in the game and committed three errors.
Cody Maerz (1-0) got the win in relief for Murray State. Maerz didn't allow a baserunner in 3.1 innings of work and recorded a season-high six strikeouts. Brad Boegel got the start for the Racers and allowed one unearned run in 5.1 innings of duty and allowed six hits while striking-out three batters.
In game one, West recorded all three of the Racers' RBIs in the loss. West doubled to center off the wall to score Taylor Mathews in the first inning to give MSU an early lead. After UTM got runs in the second and fifth, West delivered his first non-extra-base hit of the season as he hit a bloop single to shallow right field to drive-in Lawrence and Matt McGowan to give the Racers a 3-2 lead.
The Skyhawks would take the lead for good with a four-run eighth inning and went on to the victory in the opener. Mathews also had two hits in the loss for Murray State.
Brock Downey (2-2) took the loss in the contest. Downey pitched seven innings and allowed four runs on eight hits and struck-out five. Tyler Anderson and Tanner Edge each pitched an inning of relief for MSU. Anderson allowed two unearned runs on two hits in his outing while Edge allowed one hit.
The Racers and Skyhawks wrap-up their series Sunday, first pitch is set for noon in Edwardsville. The Racers are looking for their first series win of the season.
