Murray State head rifle coach Alan Lollar has announced of two additional student-athletes for the 2015-16 season; Alathea Sellars of Puryear, Tennessee and Eric Sloan of Oakdale, Connecticut. The duo's signing brings Lollar's class for next season to three as they join Mackenzie Martin of Fairhaven, Massachusetts, who signed in November.
"Both Eric and Alathea have the chance to contribute this upcoming season," said Lollar. "Both will be solid additions to the team.
Sellars comes to Murray from nearby Puryear after attending Homelife Academy. She is the recipient of the Ronald Reagan Student Leader Award and a Trustee Scholarship from Murray State. While at MSU, Sellars plans to study engineering graphics and design.
On the range, she has garnered several awards, as well. She is a four-time participant in the Tennessee High School Three-Position Air Rifle Championships where she has earned the Junior Distinguished Badge, the Precision Honorable Mention award, has been named to the All-State Sporter Air Rifle Team and in 2015, finished as the runner-up. In addition, she has also competed in the NRA National Junior Air Gun Championships, the Civilian Marksmanship Program Three-Position Air Rifle regional championships and later this year she will become a two-time participant in the National Junior Olympic Championship.
Lollar on Sellars: "Alathea is a hard-working shooter with a lot of potential. Her attention to detail and commitment give her the chance to compete."
Sloan will make the long journey to Murray from the Nutmeg State after prepping at Montville High School in Oakdale. While at Montville, he was an active member of student government and was inducted into the Spanish National Honor Society. Once he arrives on campus, Sloan plans on majoring in mechanical engineering.
In his young rifle career, Sloan is already extremely decorated. He finished second at the 2013 U.S. Open in the three-position air rifle sectional and was the intermediate junior champion at the junior sectional in four-position air rifle. He is also a two-time Connecticut state high school air rifle champion.
This year, he won the junior air rifle, three-position and four-position junior sectional and the open sectional in three-position for the state of Connecticut. He also won the state's junior Olympic qualifier in three-position. In addition, this season he also set personal bests in both air rifle, at the Plamyra Invitational with a score of 588, and in smallbore, at Murray State's own Withrow Open at 576. Like Sellars, he will also be competing in this year's National Junior Olympic Championship.
Lollar on Sloan: "Eric is from a good shooting background. He has been trained well and we are looking forward to watching him grow and progress."
