This Weekend's Action
The Racers will travel to UT Martin this weekend for the final series of the 2015 regular season.
Last Time Out
In their home and non-conference finales, the Racers split a doubleheader with regional rival Memphis, Tuesday at Racer Field. In game one, Murray State could not get the bats going and mustered just three hits. Meanwhile, Memphis took full advantage and reeled of 11 hits to pick up a 5-0 shutout of MSU.
Game two was an entirely different story, as it was the Racers with the hot bats, as they scored nine runs on nine hits in five innings. Erica Howard was a perfect 2-for-2 in the game, while Mo Ramsey and Jessica Twaddle also had two hits. Mason Robinson pitched a complete game to get the win by allowing one run on five hits with two strikeouts.
Series History vs. UT Martin
The Skyhawks have had Murray State's number in the all-time series, with UT Martin leading 13-6. The Racers have lost each of the last three meetings to UTM, but had won the three meetings previous to that. In its last trip to Martin, Murray State took two out of three games, but still trail the series there, 7-2.
Scouting The Skyhawks
The Skyhawks have struggled somewhat this season and are currently tied for the final OVC tournament spot in the league standings. After being swept at SIU Edwardsville last weekend, UT Martin will enter the final series of the season with an overall record of 24-23 and a league mark of 9-12.
The Skyhawks are currently batting .281 as a team, while opponents are hitting .304. As a pitching staff, UTM currently has a 3.85 ERA, is averaging 4.1 strikeouts per seven innings and a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 1.4:1.
Leading the Skyhawk offense this season has been Kenzi Tate with a .357 average and 38 RBIs and has been followed closely by Carly Gonzalez who is batting .344 with 34 RBIs. Elizabeth Weigand has served as UT Martin's ace this season and has a 12-8 record in 25 appearances with a 2.87 ERA and 61 strikeouts.
Record-Setting Offense
Through 50 games this season, Murray State has already produced more hits than any other season in program history with 424. The previous record was set in 2014 with 408, which was done in five more games. This year's Racers also have the highest batting average at .318, slugging percentage at .482 and on-base percentage at .391.
In Flux
The Racers are currently third in the OVC standings heading into the final week of the season. Depending on how it fares against UT Martin and how the rest of the conference games shake out, MSU can finish as high as first, but no worse than fourth. The highest Murray State has ever finished an OVC season is tied for third in 2012.
A Strong Finish
Murray State has won at least two games in the final series of the season in each of its five previous seasons of existence. Four times MSU has gone 2-1, with the only exception being the 2013 season. In 2013, the Racers went 2-0 against Austin Peay, due to the fact only two game were played because of weather.
Miller Time
Shelbey Miller was named as OVC Player of the Week Monday for the first time of her career. She hit .556 on the week with eight RBIs and two doubles.
Racer RPI
The Racers dropped to 104 in the latest rankings, despite going 5-0 last week. Even with the drop, Murray State passed Jacksonville State to move to second amongst OVC teams.
Home Sweet Home
With its sweep of Austin Peay, Murray State ended its 2015 home slate undefeated, marking the first time in program history that the feat has occurred. In total, the Racers lost just three games at Racer Field for a record of 14-3.
Six Straight
With the two wins at Tennessee Tech, the Racers have qualified for the 2015 OVC Tournament. This marks the sixth consecutive appearance for MSU, making it to the championship in each season of its existence.
