Murray State men's basketball coach Steve Prohm announced the signing of Chad Culbreath of Ripley, Tennessee, Charles Brown of New Orleans, Louisiana and Brion Sanchious of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
Â
All three will be freshmen with the Racers in the fall. Culbreath is a 5-10 guard. Brown (6-7) and Sanchious (6-8) Â are forwards.
Â
"Our program needed depth in the post and at guard and we've done that with the addition of Chad, Charles and Brion," said Prohm. "This trio brings a lot of athleticism and toughness to our program and we're looking forward to getting them here this summer."
Â
Chad Culbreath – 5-10 – G – Ripley HS – Ripley, Tenn.
Culbreath comes to Murray State after becoming the all-time scorer at Ripley with more than 2,600 points, including a senior season in which he scored 1,168 points and averaged 27 points per game. He helped the Tigers to 105 wins in the last four seasons including advancement to the Tennessee Class 2A State Tournament semifinals in each of the last two seasons.
Â
"Chad was an outstanding scorer in high school and brings an excellent skill-set to our program," Coach Prohm said. "We want student-athletes from winning programs and he comes from an outstanding program at Ripley that has been a consistent winner. Chad has a great upside and we're looking forward to getting him here and seeing him develop. He brings us deeded point guard depth."
Â
Culbreath was named All-State and played for Coach Lonnie Starks at Ripley.
Â
"Chad has been a great leader for us and he comes to play every game," Coach Starks said. "He plays for the guys on his team and that's what drives him. He's the kind of player that you want the ball in his hands when the game is on the line. I think Murray State is a great fit for Chad. It's the perfect place for him to play and to get his degree. Coach Prohm and his staff did a great job in their recruitment of Chad."
Â
Culbreath had one game in January with 12 points, 19 assists and seven rebounds against Jackson Central Merry.
Â
He was part of the west squad (March 20) in the Basketball Coaches of Tennessee All-Star Game. He helped his team win 129-109 with 21 points and 12 assists.
Â
Charles Brown – 6-7 – F – St. Augustine HS – New Orleans, La.
Brown comes from a St. Augustine Purple Knights program (Louisiana Class 5A) that won a combined 75 games in the last three seasons, including going 24-6 in 2014-15. He had a postseason game against Carencro High School of 21 points and 12 rebounds.
Â
Brown was named District MVP as a senior in leading his team in scoring (16 points per game) and rebounding (9.0 per game). The Times-Picayune named him to their All-New Orleans Large School Team.
Â
"We're excited that Charles has decided to be part of the Racer Family," Prohm said. "He has all the qualities that we look for in a student-athlete. His work ethic and ability will give him a chance to be a very good player for us. He comes from a great high school program and from a city that has produced many basketball standouts in the past. We're excited to get another New Orleans guy in our program."
Â
Mitchell Johnson was Brown's coach at St. Augustine the last three seasons.
Â
"Charles is a phenomenal kid and a hard worker," Coach Johnson said. "He's a student-athlete. He's a student of the game and excellent in the classroom. Murray State is getting someone that takes both seriously. I've enjoyed coaching him and I'm looking forward to seeing his development at Murray State."
Â
Brion Sanchious – 6-8 – F- Northeast HS – Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
Sanchious comes to the Racers from Northeast High School (Florida Class 5A) where he was a two-sport star for the Hurricanes.
Â
"We really like Brion's quickness and athleticism," Prohm said. "He can impact the game with his length and change shots and finish at the rim. We've had great success recruiting south Florida and we're excited to get another player from down there."
Â
In the 2014-15 season, Sanchious led the state in blocked shots while averaging 12 points and 12 rebounds per game. He was also an outstanding football player as a quarterback.
Â
In basketball, The Sun-Sentinel named Sanchious All-Broward County Honorable Mention among the best players from class 6A, 7A and 8A.
Â
Sanchious hails from Northeast High School, the same place that produced outgoing senior T.J. Sapp. Both played for Coach Darrance Gillion.
Â
"Brion is one heck of a talent," said Coach Gillion. "His potential in basketball is scary. He's only scratched the surface on how good he could be. The way Murray State likes to play, he'll be asset. This is where his football experience can help him, because for a big man, he can move. This spring is the first time he's been all basketball and not going through spring football. I'm excited to see what he can become in basketball.
