Murray State rifle sophomore Ben Estes made quite an impact in his first international completion earlier this month at the International Shooting Sport Federation Junior Cup in Shul, Germany.
Estes competed in five events while in Germany: the 50m 3 positions rifle, the 50m prone rifle, the 10m air rifle, the 10m air rifle mixed team and the junior super cup. The Ozark, Mo., native finished the eight-day event with two top 10 finishes and a team medal.
"I am really proud of the way Ben stayed calm on his first international trip," said head coach Alan Lollar. "He wasn't intimidated by the surroundings or the competition and competed very well."
In the 50m 3 positions rifle, Estes posted the top qualifying score of 1167 with 47 center shots. While he went on to finish in sixth in the finals, his qualifying score did help anchor the team portion of the event and lead the U.S. to a silver medal.
In the 10m air rifle event, the rising sophomore shot a 621.0 to finish fifth and earn a spot in his second final. In the finals, Estes finished fourth, missing the podium by just nine-tenths of a point.
