The Murray State women's soccer team hopes to continue their success over SEC teams Sunday as they take on Tennessee in Knoxville.
The Racers (2-1) started off their season win a thrilling victory over Mississippi State. It was the first time in program history Murray State had defeated an SEC opponent.
Now MSU will face their second SEC opponent of the season in Tennessee. The Racers have only played the Vols of Tennessee once before in 2002. The conclusion of the match was unsuccessful as the Vols crushed the Racers 6-1.
Murray State comes into the match off a win against Arkansas State. Rachael Foxley converted her first penalty kick of her career at MSU in the first half. Goals by Destiny White and Harriet Withers in the second half were enough to push the Racers past ASU.
Tennessee is 1-0-3 on the season. The only win on the season for the Vols comes against Georgia Southern. Â UT has since yet to score in a match playing to double over time draws to Liberty and most recently Virginia Tech.
Though the programs do not have much history playing one another, assistant coach Vanessa Phillips-Bosshart knows quite a bit about the Tennessee soccer program.
Phillips-Bosshart is an Academic All-American from Tennessee. She played goalkeeper for the Vols and set records for goalkeeper shutouts and goals against average that still hold today.
Â
The Racers have spent the past two weekends on the road. This is the last match on the road before the home opener. MSU will return home Sept. 11, to take on Louisiana Tech followed by a match on Sept. 13 against Middle Tennessee. Live stats and video streaming will be available.
Match time is set for 5:30 p.m. on Sunday against Tennessee. Live stats and video will be available at goracers.com.
