After a historic fall portion of the 2015-16 season, the second ranked Murray State rifle team returns to action Saturday in Oxford, Mississippi to take on No. 8 Nebraska and hosts No. 16 Ole Miss in a tri-match.
After shooting a respectable 4676 in each of their two matches, it was a home performance against Kentucky that began the hot start for the Racers. Despite the loss to the Wildcats, the Racers shot program records of 2341 in smallbore and 4693 in overall score, breaking the 4690 plateau for the first time in program history.
However, just one week later, both records would fall again at home as Murray State notched a 2348 in smallbore and 4714 in overall score, marking the first time any Racer team had ever shot 4700 or better as a team. The score is also the highest shot by any team this season, with only West Virginia matching the mark.
The following weekend, the Racers would travel to Columbus, Ohio where they shot a 4699 and a 4692, with each score including a school-record 2368 performance in air rifle. Over its final two matches of the fall, Murray State shot a 4699 against top-ranked West Virginia in Akron, before topping 4700 once against with a 4705 in Jacksonville, Alabama in its last match of 2015. After having never eclipsed the 4690 mark before this season, the Racers have now posted six consecutive 4690-plus performances.
Individually, Ivan Roe leads the Racers in all categories with a 585.9 average in smallbore, a 591.1 in air rifle for an 1177.0 overall average. Roe, who is currently in the mix for a spot on the Olympic rifle team, shot a 591 a season-high in smallbore at Jacksonville State, a score that ranks as second-best in the nation this season.
Roe, along with freshmen MacKenzie Martin and Barbara Schläpfer, have all shot a team-high 595 in air rifle, just three shots off the nation's best score this season. In overall score, both Roe and Schläpfer have turned in an 1185, the second-best overall individual score in the country.
Next weekend, the Racers return home to host the 2016 Withrow Invitational, one of the largest and most prestigious collegiate and juniors tournament in the nation.
